European Big Data Hackathon – registration deadline 20 September
EMOS students can register for the Europen Big Data Hackathon.
The fifth edition of the European Big Data Hackathon, taking place 6-10 March 2025 back-to-back to the NTTS conference in Brussels, presents again a unique opportunity for EMOS labelled programmes and students, to test their creativity as well as data analytics and visualisation skills, to meet and network with other EMOS students and practitioners from national statistical institutes from across the EU, and to possibly seek new inspiration for their study and career paths.
EMOS teams can be proposed until 20 September 2024 by completing this survey: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/EMOShackathon2025
After the deadline, the EMOS Board will select the 2025 EMOS hackathon teams, seeking to ensure as wide as possible country representation and taking into consideration a match between skills set and the 2025 hackathon topic and your motivation. The pre-selected teams will be contacted for Hackathon registration and next steps.
The European Commission will organise travel and accommodation, and finance related costs, for up to four EMOS teams. Apart from the hackathon prizes, the best EMOS team will also be given the opportunity to present their prototypes at the NTTS 2025.
Hackathon topic
In the upcoming 2025 hackathon competition, Earth Observation data, made available by the Directorate General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) of the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA), will be explored using the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE).
What do the teams do – preparation
The teams will analyse and extract information from big and open data sources and develop prototypes useful for answering the specific EU policy issues that will be announced at the beginning of the hackathon.
In the coming months, Eurostat will provide a catalogue of datasets consisting of a description of the datasets and instructions on how they can be accessed. Teams are allowed to use additional data sources, which they may prepare in advance. These additional data sources should have an international applicability, i.e., they either cover EU Member States widely or they are national data sources but may be available in several Member States. They should basically allow the particular data product to be possibly released as a policy tool at European level.
The teams are free to propose any type of data products in the hackathon. The only conditions are that they should help to address the policy needs or the statistical challenge and they have to include a front end (i.e. visualisation) which allows the policy analyst and /or statisticians to explore the answers provided by the data product.
