Alumni Experiences

We care about our graduates. We are interested in what they pursue after leaving the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics. We enjoy staying in touch with them and following their journey after completing their studies. The success of our graduates is also the success of the faculty.

Ing. Filip Hon, Ph.D.

While studying for my master’s degree in Economic Demography, I assisted the department as a research aide. I got involved in organizational activities and gained valuable experience in data analysis. I enjoyed the work and decided to pursue a Ph.D. I found that this choice brought me a great deal of personal freedom that I wouldn’t have found in other jobs. In the academic environment, you can also consult with top experts in the field, both domestically and internationally, about your dissertation progress. Thanks to the Ph.D., I acquired above-average qualifications in computational methods and related software programs. After completing my studies, I decided to stay in academia and currently hold the position of secretary of the department at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics at VŠE. I would recommend doctoral studies to anyone who can manage their life independently, wants to do what they love, and has a desire for deeper knowledge.

doc. Ing. Mgr. Zdeněk Smutný, Ph.D.

After earning my bachelor’s degree at the Faculty of Science at UJEP, I continued at VŠE, where I studied Cognitive Informatics for my master’s degree. At the beginning of my doctoral studies in Applied Informatics, we formed a great group with other doctoral students and supported each other throughout. We discussed and tackled our dissertation topics, research, and publications together – often in a pub. Friends from my doctoral studies are still an important part of my social capital today. During our doctoral studies, we even founded the journal Acta Informatica Pragensia, which is still running. Studying for a Ph.D. is different from previous studies. It’s not about taking courses; it revolves around your own research. Since I was already working in research and development during my studies, the Ph.D. served as a good starting point for my further career. I am now a project manager in research and development at Telematix Software, focusing on the development of intelligent transport systems, and I also work at VŠE as an associate professor. I would recommend doctoral studies to people who like to think openly about the world (which is increasingly intertwined with information technologies) and want to learn to solve problems using scientific approaches. I also recommend it to those who wish to work as researchers, innovative managers, or university lecturers in the future.

Ing. Mgr. Martina Miskolczi, Ph.D., MBA

I studied Applied Statistics from 1992 to 1997, with a minor in Demography and Social Analysis. After my studies, I spent a year abroad, attended other schools, and later returned to VŠE for doctoral studies. The doctoral program was time-consuming and challenging, especially given my family and work commitments. However, I learned to work independently, actively published, taught students, and participated in conferences and academic events. I also learned to juggle multiple tasks, combining family, full-time work, and academic activities. Currently, I work on several projects – in the American start-up SaluberMD as a senior strategy, financial, and business consultant; at PricewaterhouseCoopers Czech Republic, working on audits of financial companies in the area of credit risk; and on projects for small Czech companies and start-ups, preparing business plans and materials for potential investors, and preparing them for due diligence. Additionally, I teach students in the English master’s programs Economic Data Analysis and Information Systems Management at VŠE. While doctoral studies did not bring significant changes to my professional life, I would recommend it to those who want to experience the academic environment, work scientifically, or have a unique field they wish to explore in depth.

prof. Dipl.-Ing. Adrian August Wildenauer, Ph.D., M.Sc.

I graduated from the Applied Informatics doctoral program at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics at VŠE. A good study plan is half the battle in doctoral studies, and having a good supervisor who not only encourages but also challenges you helps a lot. Thanks to the Ph.D., I was able to delve into specific topics that interested me in my practice. The skills and knowledge I gained were later applied in my career, and I became a professor (professor for digital building, Bern University of Applied Sciences) in the field I specialized in during my doctoral studies. I would definitely recommend doctoral studies at VŠE to those who want to pursue an academic career and continuously develop. Although it wasn’t always easy, I consider the collaboration with my supervisor a very valuable experience that helped me mature.
