General information

The character of doctoral studies is very different compared to bachelor’s and master’s studies. It is more about scientific research activities, carried out in collaboration with a supervisor and the department team, rather than classical studies. Although the program includes several exams, they constitute only a small part of the individual study plan. This plan also includes the aforementioned scientific research activities, the outputs of which are primarily articles published in professional journals and presentations at conferences. The knowledge and results obtained during the research then form the basis of the dissertation, which doctoral students work on from the very beginning of their studies.

The aim of the PhD programmes at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics is to prepare highly qualified staff for scientific work, whose activities will develop theories and research in their chosen field. The studies follow an individual study plan under the guidance of a supervisor and, where appropriate, a consultant.  The studies are completed by the defence of the dissertation and the graduate receives the degree of “Doctor” Ph.D., which he/she carries behind his/her name.

The doctoral degree brings with it a number of changes compared to the previous bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Here is a small overview of what studying for a particular PhD degree entails.
