MOS students on Internship
Written by Jing and Praveen
As master’s students of European Master’s in Official Statistics (EMOS) at the Prague University of Economics and Business, We, Jing Zhang and Praveen Sharma, had the incredible opportunity to intern at the Czech Statistical Office (CSO). This experience allowed us to contribute to impactful national and international statistical projects, expanding our knowledge and skills in ways we never imagined.
Jing worked in the Macroeconomic Department of National Accounts, focusing on personal remittances in Europe. This involved updating methodologies for estimating remittance flows and integrating data from surveys conducted among foreigners living in the Czech Republic. The work is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of national accounts and providing insights into international economic dynamics.
Praveen interned in the Demography Division, where he delved into the transformation of the Czech Census. His research examined the transition from traditional paper-based models to mixed models and, more recently, to register-based systems. This shift represents a significant modernization effort, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of demographic data collection and its application in policymaking.
Through this internship, thanks to Prague University of Economic and Business and our professors, we gained invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between academic theories and real-world challenges. We collaborated with seasoned professionals, learned to adapt to complex problems, and applied innovative solutions to statistical projects with far-reaching implications.
This journey has been transformative for both of us. Jing’s work on remittances provided a deeper understanding of macroeconomic indicators, while Praveen’s research on the census highlighted the evolving nature of demographic methodologies. These experiences have not only enriched our skill sets but also clarified our career aspirations.
We are grateful to the Czech Statistical Office for this exceptional learning experience and to our supervisors for their guidance and mentorship. Interning at the CSO has strengthened our passion for using data to make a meaningful impact on society.
For anyone curious about pursuing similar opportunities, we encourage you to join the Prague University of Economic and Business and explore internships in the field of statistics and data analysis. It’s a chance to apply your skills, tackle meaningful challenges, and contribute to projects that truly make a difference. Feel free to connect with us if you’d like to know more about our journey—we’d be happy to share our experiences and insights.
