FIS Students Triumph at the European Big Data Hackathon 2025

The European Big Data Hackathon 2025, organized by Eurostat, concluded with great achievements for students from the Economic Data Analysis (EDA) programme. The student team of this programme, consisting of Jing Zhang nad Praveen Sharma, participated in this competition and represented our university well. Praveen and  Jing are EDA students majoring in Official Statistics, EDA specialization accredited with the EMOS label (European  Master in Official Statistics).

The event took place in Brussels from March 6 to 11, 2025. There have been 20  Teams, representing the National Statistical Insitutes from 17 European countries and also 7 Teams consisting of students from the EMOS labelled universities.

This year’s hackathon focused on integrating Earth Observation data with official statistics to develop innovative solutions for pressing EU policy issues. Teams were tasked with analyzing and extracting information from big and open data sources, and developing prototypes that could be used as policy tools at the European level.

Jing and Praveen beat all other teams from EMOS programmes to take the first place for EMOS schools. Their solution not only addressed the given challenge effectively but also demonstrated a high level of creativity and technical expertise

In addition to their first-place win, Jing and Praveen also received the fourth place for their innovative idea, showcasing their ability to think outside the box and propose novel approaches to data problems.
