Inauguration of the Dean. We Are FIS. One Faculty. One Future.
On Thursday, 26 February, the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics held the ceremonial inauguration of its new Dean, doc. Ota Novotný, PhD. The event combined traditional academic elements with a modern and inspiring atmosphere, symbolically reflecting the direction in which the faculty intends to move in the coming years.
“This is not about handing over a chain. It is about handing over the future of the faculty,” was heard during the ceremony. Along with the assumption of office, the FIS 2030 vision and the One Faculty programme were also presented.
The world is changing rapidly, and universities face new challenges. Knowledge is now available almost instantly, and according to the new Dean, simply passing it on is no longer enough. FIS wants to have a real impact.
“Impact is not the number of students taught or the number of published articles. Impact is when our graduates become people who can thrive in times of change. When our research advances knowledge and at the same time helps someone tangibly. And when, thanks to FIS, companies and public institutions make better decisions—based on data, on evidence, and with responsibility.”
At FIS, we have an advantage: changes in data, technology, and decision‑making are our field. We see them earlier than others, and we want to use them as an opportunity to return to the essence of the university—developing individuals, advancing knowledge, and bringing real value to society.

After the official programme, guests enjoyed a toast and a concert by the band Melanchollica, which included Jan Černý from FIS. The event was hosted by faculty alumnus Miloslav Vach. The festive day thus combined academic tradition with the energy and openness that the faculty aims to cultivate in the future. A short video from the event is available on the faculty’s Instagram.
This day marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics.
Let’s make an impact.
We are FIS. One Faculty. One Future.
