Pilsen, the home of Pilsner beer
Written by Amrita
If you’re looking for a day of culture, history, and, of course, some delicious beer, Plzeň in the Czech Republic should be at the top of the list! I spent a day there and had an absolute blast. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect in this charming city. Many direct trains go to Pilsen from Prague and the travel time one way is around 1 hour 20 mins.
1. Pilsner Urquell Brewery Tour – Cheers to That!
First things first—if you’ve ever cracked open a cold Pilsner, you’re already halfway to understanding Pilsen’s pride and joy: the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. This is the birthplace of the world-famous lager, and the brewery tour is a must! The guide walks you through the brewing process (with some fun facts) and, of course, ends with a tasting. Let’s just say, the beer tasted so much better straight from the source. Note: please book tickets in advance for the guided tour, its sold out almost all the time.
2. The Synagogue: A Step Back in Time
Next, I headed to the Great Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe. It’s stunning, with a mix of Moorish and Gothic design, and the history behind it is fascinating. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for some quiet reflection, this spot doesn’t disappoint.
3. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral – A Towering Beauty
A short walk away, St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is an absolute gem. The architecture is jaw-dropping, and if you’re feeling adventurous (and have the leg strength), you can climb the 300+ steps to the top for a panoramic view of the city. Worth it? Totally. Its the tallest church in Czech Republic.
4. Puppet Museum – Quirky and Fun
Now, here’s where things get a bit more fun and quirky: the Puppet Museum! Pilsen has a rich tradition of puppetry, and this museum gives you a peek into that world. Some of the puppets are downright creepy, but it’s all in good fun. If you love a bit of oddball charm, don’t miss it!
5. Optional: Pilsen Zoo
If you have some extra time (and energy), head over to the Pilsen Zoo. It’s pretty easy to spend an hour or two there, especially if you’re into animals, or if you just need a break from all the beer and culture.
Overall, Pilsen is a city that packs a lot into one day. You’ll get a taste of local history, architecture, quirky museums, and of course, the best beer in the world. So grab your friends, plan your trip, and get ready for a day full of good times!
