General information

The character of doctoral studies is very different compared to bachelor’s and master’s studies. It is more about scientific research activities, carried out in collaboration with a supervisor and the department team, rather than classical studies. Although the program includes several exams, they constitute only a small part of the individual study plan. This plan also includes the aforementioned scientific research activities, the outputs of which are primarily articles published in professional journals and presentations at conferences. The knowledge and results obtained during the research then form the basis of the dissertation, which doctoral students work on from the very beginning of their studies.

At the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics, the standard duration of all doctoral study programs is four years and they can be studied in either full-time or part-time form. In addition to programs in the Czech language, programs in English are also accredited, but they are subject to fees.

Applied Informatics

Applied Informatics

The Applied Informatics program at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics of the Prague University of Economics and Business differs from most informatics doctoral programs in the Czech Republic by its closer integration of technological aspects with social and managerial-organizational ones. During their studies, doctoral students participate in both basic research projects (GAČR) and applied research projects (TAČR, contract research with companies, departmental grants, etc.), often involving foreign partners and in synergy with teams from economically/managerially oriented departments of VŠE. This enables doctoral students to integrate theoretical knowledge and insights with practical aspects throughout their studies.

Econometrics and Operations Research

Graduates with a background in mathematics, computer science, and economics can focus on scientific work in the field of mathematical modeling of economic processes within the Econometrics and Operations Research program at the Prague University of Economics and Business. Students are expected to engage in the department’s scientific research work and publish their results at conferences and in journals. Access to professional literature, journals, and top-notch software products is provided. The entrance exams are within the scope of the state exam for the master’s program in Econometrics and Operations Research at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics, Prague University of Economics and Business.

Statistics

The Statistics program is particularly suitable for graduates of master’s degree specializations in statistics from the Prague University of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University, or other domestic and foreign institutions. During the admission process, applicants can select a specific statistical department at VŠE based on their interests and the availability of supervisors. All three departments offer doctoral students access to a rich collection of professional literature, computing equipment, and the benefit of departmental staff’s connections with various statistical practice organizations. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge equivalent to the state final examination for the master’s program in Statistics during the entrance exam.

Admissions Process

Every applicant for doctoral studies must submit an electronic application and pay an administrative fee. The electronic application also includes an Appendix to the Application form, Declaration concerning previous and current studies, a structured professional resume, proof of higher education, and a dissertation project in which the applicant outlines their intended research focus. Applicants for the Applied Informatics program must write a five-page dissertation proposal, while applicants for Econometrics and Operations Research and Statistics must submit a two-page proposal in English. The name of the supervisor must also be provided.
